Says “mama”, “dada”, and/or one other word

Attempts to imitate animal and environmental sounds  (i.e. woof or vroom vroom for car)

Imitates familiar words (i.e. juice)

Waves good-bye and plays interactive games (i.e. peek-a-boo)

Recognizes his or her name

Understands “no”; as demonstrated with a pause /stopping activity

Gives a toy upon verbal request (i.e., give me)

Understands simple instructions (i.e. come here, sit down)

Follows simple daily routines (i.e. goes to kitchen for meals)

Lilya Popovetsky, MA SpEd, CAS, SDA is the founder of A Multilingual Development Agency, a NYS DOH approved Early Intervention agency for children from birth to three years old in Nassau County, NY.    She obtained a Master’s Degree from Columbia University’s Teacher’s College in Early Childhood Special Education, with a dual certification in General Education.  Lilya went on to complete two educational administration degrees from Hofstra University.
